In our bar & restaurant we offer brunch today (we opened at 9am) and we serve until 11pm. We don't have a lot of dining reservations, but it's a beautiful day and it's going to be busy again! Meanwhile we have to prepare for tomorrow, as Easter brunch is always a popular time! Tonight, after dinner, the KC Bear Fighters are going to perform in our Saloon space for a local audience who likes to dance, sing, and enjoy a few beers!
Today we're shuffling around to get ready for 3 events here on-site and one big catering event I'll tell you more about! First we have a bridal shower in the our main bar area, with access to sidewalk seating, where they can catch a few rays of sun and enjoy a brunch buffet with bloody Marys! We also have a private baby shower with a similar time frame, taking place in our library dining room, a beautiful mezzanine level, perfect for hosting an intimate gathering.
Our ballrooms are currently being decked out for a wedding ceremony, followed by the wedding reception, for a very cute couple that booked their wedding day at Californos over a year ago! After enduring a 12 month engagement, the day is finally here and they are ecstatic! We reserved our Saloon this morning as a bridal suite for the bride and her small entourage. They are already there, having fun, with music, refreshments and a lot of hair styling!
The biggest group of the day is actually our catered gala event for a very well-known non-profit organization here in Kansas City. Their mission involves sustainability, environmental education and action plans. For 350 guests tonight, we're catering a 7 piece dinner of heavy hors d'oeuvres as well as 16 dozen mini cupcakes (chocolate and our blue ribbon carrot cake). With this group, there are some special requests on food. Since the organization is focused on sustainability, we're eating lower on the food chain tonight. They requested no beef, but rather pork, fish, chicken and turkey. We're also going to help host over a dozen vegans, many pescatarians and vegetarians too! It takes a huge staff to create hand made appetizers and serve them across town! Luckily, after 30 years we have an amazing list of co-workers, folks that have years of experience with catering, and we love these big days when we get to work with old friends who are passionate about Californos and putting our best foot forward!
Our menu will include an antipasta display, along with sides of roasted salmon, grilled, roasted & raw veggies, mini twice baked potato, tomato bruschetta, our signature chicken salad on an angel biscuit (these biscuits are to-die-for), and some vegetarian fare like our stuffed mushrooms (gluten free) and our creamy macaroni & cheese. We make the top crispy with Japanese rice crumbs.
Tonight's event is "zero land-fill", which means that everything is being prepared and served in a way that creates no garbage beyond compostable materials. Guests will enjoy their appetizers with china plates and actual metal forks, rather than cheap and trashy plastic.
