Today, we're sharing a detailed review from a Californos bride who just had her one year wedding anniversary. This couple came to us at the last minute, needing to change venues for their special event. Luckily, we had their date open. They were actually booked at one of our very favorite local restaurants for their reception, but this couple felt that they should change venues. Please read on to find out why, and what was done about it:
"To say Californos went above and beyond to host our wedding reception is an understatement! When we called Mig and Aaron with a major crisis on our hands, they not only saved the day, but made our wedding day as effortless as possible and utterly beautiful! Nine days before our October wedding, the restaurant my fiancé and I had originally hired to host our reception cancelled out of the blue. Despite our best efforts to negotiate, they decided instead to turn their venue into a Halloween house of horrors, and we were forced to find another restaurant to host our reception with barely a week to go. Welcome to every bride’s nightmare!
But from our very first phone call, Aaron and Mig at Californos were accommodating beyond our wildest dreams, and did everything within their power to help. With professional calm and the utmost efficiency, they offered us their ballroom (available due to a serendipitous cancellation), and took care of all the logistics—providing a piano for the musician, setting up the room for our unique needs, and lining up valet parking for our guests. In addition, the per-person pricing was refreshingly easy to understand, and Mig assured me that once I made basic selections for the buffet and bar, they would take it from there. And they did.
As Mig promised, all we had to do was show up the day of our wedding and everything was ready and waiting. Every bride hopes for that kind of experience, of course. But given our situation, being able to simply trust Californos to do a professional and thoughtful job--without any extra oversight by us-- saved me unfathomable time and stress. And best of all… in the end, you wouldn’t have even known that our reception was such a last minute production!
It was elegant and seamless, the food was delicious, the facility was ten times more beautiful and memorable than our original venue, and the guests absolutely adored it. I wish we could have gone with Californos from the beginning. But because of a fateful turn of events, the stars aligned and we were given the chance to work with this classy, professional, and exceedingly KIND group of people. Californos will always have a special place in our hearts because of that. Five stars is not enough."

Finding the perfect location for your vows and ring ceremony is a big step in the early days or weeks of wedding planning for many an engaged couple. The trend is to host both events in one location for ease of planning and travel for special guests and family. Deciding whether to host this at a church, a park, or at your reception venue will be one of the first things to decipher as you move forward with your wedding budget and planning. Booking that perfect venue for the wedding and determining the logistics of who will be in the wedding ceremony is usually foremost on a bride's list of priorities when it comes to establishing some basics about the wedding and how it's all going to proceed. The exact time of the wedding usually takes a back seat to other details in these early conversations, but can be the next big question once brides have booked the venue for a wedding ceremony and reception in one single location.
As at a church ceremony, you can expect guests to begin arriving 30 minutes before the ceremony time indicated on your wedding invitation. Other considerations include whether...
...the ceremony is outdoors or inside, and in that case, how warm will it be for the ceremony? If you hold your ceremony during daylight hours, the sun will warm your guests in the early and late season. An indoor ceremony can benefit from the right light as well, so consult your photographer and ceremony venue to work out the ideal timing for your wedding ceremony.
For a Saturday wedding, there's generally no rule of thumb, as you can justify almost any time frame for an excuse to get together with friends and family and celebrate the big day! A ceremony in the morning, with an afternoon reception opens the door to a brunch or lunch event, which could be very fun and cost efficient. The vast majority of Saturday events will take place in the evening, with common ceremony times ranging from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
At our Westport venue and at many ceremony and reception locations in Kansas City, the wedding ceremony itself will take place in all of twenty minutes. We schedule a half an hour as a general rule of thumb, and brides are free to decide how long their own wedding ceremony will actually be. The wedding reception begins with an open bar and appetizers immediately following the vows and ring ceremony at Californos.
For a Friday wedding, there are often different considerations. Even though it feels like a Saturday to you and to many guests who have traveled into town for your special event, some local guests will work their normal schedule on the day of your event and may not be free until 6:00 pm or later. 7:00 pm or 6:30 at the earliest on a Friday is generally a good idea for allowing ample time for guests to arrive in a timely manner as they do intend!
